From Domains to Doing Good: A Conversation with Mike Mann

Mike Mann isn’t your typical tech entrepreneur. While he’s best known as a pioneer in the domain industry—having launched powerhouses like Phone.com, SEO.com, and DomainMarket.com—his true legacy lies in a deeper mission: leveraging business for social impact.

In a recent episode of Ten with Jen, Mike opened up in a refreshingly honest and unscripted chat. The conversation revealed a man who’s not only sold companies and crafted deals with top venture capitalists but has also stayed grounded through fatherhood, philanthropy, and a healthy fear of spiders.

“Selling BuyDomains was a banner moment,” Mike recalls, noting how the success fueled not only his financial growth but also helped jumpstart his charitable initiatives. Yet, he’s quick to point out that meaningful work isn’t always about big exits. “It can’t just be about money and glamor,” he says. “There has to be something beneficial to society.”

Mike’s ethical approach isn’t just talk. Through his Make Change Trust, he supports sustainable charities and dreams of replicating his charitable model across cities. His goal? Maximize impact while encouraging others to get involved too.

That same no-nonsense mindset carries into his work style. Mike describes domain negotiations as fast-paced and fair: “We’re selling high-quality assets at accurate prices. If it’s too low, we lose money. If it’s too high, we go out of business.”

Outside the boardroom, Mike’s passion is clear. He gushes about Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York as his most-played album and still remembers seeing Kurt Cobain live—a transcendent moment, just months before Cobain’s death.

But it’s his thoughts on parenthood that might surprise people most. “Raising kids is the most difficult and most important thing in life,” he admits. “Free time disappears, sleep is out of the question—but it’s the best thing happening.”

At the end of the day, Mike Mann wants to be remembered not just for the businesses he built, but for the lives he impacted. And maybe, just maybe, for convincing others that success and social good aren’t mutually exclusive—they’re part of the same legacy.
